Day at the Beach

a Poem by Raquel Swann

Sparking waves roll in one by one

crashing into a crowed shore

a lone cloud keeps a watchful eye

refusing to budge on a hot summer’s day

Seagulls swoop in hoping to steal

an unguarded sandwich

with no such luck it cries

resuming its flight underneath

a perfect sky

a mother staggers in seconds of horror

as her little one is taken under by

an angry wave

the child gasps for air,

releasing a high pitched cough,

then smiles.

a lesson learned amidst

salty air, and a steadying ocean breeze

holding hands, children giggling

families gathering, growing

Hardly a phone in sight,

except from a unaccompanied woman,

taken hostage by pixels,

with such beauty and love

all around.
